The History of Family Offices and Chamberlain
Royal and Noble Families
The history of chamberlains in Western nobility dates back to the Middle Ages, when aristocratic families owned vast amounts of land and resources, requiring professionals to manage their affairs and assets. The primary responsibilities of chamberlains included financial management, organizing affairs, hosting guests, and even overseeing the family’s commercial ventures and farms. Chamberlains of nobility were often highly trusted by their families and held a relatively elevated status within the household, sometimes even influencing the decision-making of the noble family.

From the 17th to 18th centuries onward, the role of chamberlains expanded beyond domestic affairs to include external matters, becoming an indispensable part of aristocratic families.
Eastern Noble Families
In ancient China, the imperial court had the “Grand Steward” (太宰), who oversaw state affairs, while prominent families also had a “Household Steward” (家宰), essentially the prime minister of wealthy and noble households. The concept of the “Household Steward” dates back to the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, referring to the steward of ancient aristocratic families who was responsible for managing household affairs. The Household Steward handled all internal family matters, serving as the chief of domestic servants and the right-hand manager of the aristocrat. Appointments and dismissals of servants, both major and minor, were managed by the Household Steward, who even oversaw other stewards, such as the town stewards (邑宰).

At times, the Household Steward also represented the aristocrat, who had the authority to independently levy taxes within their fiefdom. Typically, the Household Steward was in charge of tax collection matters.
In summary, we can say that the Household Steward was the precursor to the family financial stewards of Eastern aristocratic families.
